Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

A Form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago.  It works on the premise that when your energy flow or qi (chi) is out of balance, your body cannot efficiently adapt to stress, leaving you more prone to chronic illness and pain.  Acupuncture works to restore the natural flow of energy and balance the circulation of qi.

Can Acupuncture Help you?

Acupuncture has been proven effective in treating various forms of pain and acute and chronic conditions, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Migraines
  • Muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Infertility and hormonal imbalances
  • Insomnia
  • Skin conditions
  • Nicotine and other addictions
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Immune deficiencies
  • Trigger Finger (painful locking fingers)
  • Allergy (seasonal allergy, recurrent flu)
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Frozen Shoulder

How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is a safe and effective technique of inserting fine, flexible, sterile needles into areas of muscle pain or specific acupuncture points.  These points are distributed along energy channels called meridians, which are located all over the body.  The needles are usually left in place for 15 to 30 minutes.  They can also be stimulated manually or with a mild electrical current to enhance the effects of the treatment.

Is Acupuncture a Recognized Practice?

Since 1996, acupuncture has been regulated under the Health Professions Act of BC.  To practice in BC, acupuncturists must be registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia.  The College ensures that practitioners meet and maintain rigorous standards of care.
